Youth Accelerator Project

Be somebody to someone. Be a mentor.

If you are reading this now, you have already taken the first step in making a difference in the life of a young person.

The Youth Accelerator Project (YAP) is designed to help maximize the potential of all our youth, but particularly racialized youth.

With the support of a positive, caring adult, young people are motivated and inspired to performing well in school. A young person is more likely to become a well-rounded, independent adult with the help and guidance of a mentor.

This is why we focus on enabling youth to expand their minds, build confidence, and persevere through various challenges.

Children and youth benefit from mentorship in many areas

Access to Resources

We provide mental health and tutoring supports, introduction to key people, physical activities, grants, and awards, and other resources.

Capacity Building

We offer opportunities to learn about and practice leadership, plan events, budget for programs, and develop other life-changing skills.

Empowerment

We equip youth to develop confidence and learn to exercise their voice in advocating for themselves, their families, and communities and learn to value and embrace their life story.

Educational Enrichment

We intentionally support the academic pursuits of our youth in a relational context. In partnership with the WRDSB school board, we address systemic and personal barriers.

Experience

Engagement in experiences that promote growth and development plays an essential role in promoting vitality and contribution. The experience might include trips to Toronto camping and canoeing trips, access to music lessons, access to sports teams, and art lessons.

Mentorship

Healthy relationships are essential because they tie together the entire growth process. Youth must know that they have an adult in their corner, believing in them and their potential.

FAQ

How does the mentoring program work?

The mentorship program is an agreement between A4C and each mentor. Interested individuals will be asked to fill out a mentor profile form and undergo the screening process. Selected candidates will then undergo training and will be paired with a mentee.

How long is the program?

The program is 3 – 6 months long, depending on the availability of the mentor. Each mentor will meet with their mentee 2 – 4 times a month for at least one hour per session.

What support will I get as a mentor?

A4C will provide support for each mentor to ensure the mentoring experience is successful for both the mentor and the mentee. Our support includes an orientation session, training programs for mentors, and coaching support throughout the program.

Orientation
This session will provide new mentors the opportunity to learn more about the program, which will help them get started.

Training
There will be four 1-hour sessions that will focus on learning key development areas that will prepare and equip our mentors.

Ongoing Coaching and Support
We will constantly follow up with you throughout the program to get your feedback and provide support as needed.
