Adventures in Action – 2025 Second Quarter

Published: August 21, 2025

Last quarter, we witnessed firsthand the power of connection, collaboration, and community-driven impact. From cultural celebrations and volunteer appreciation to youth empowerment and leadership development, every moment deepened our mission and expanded our impact. Here’s a look at the tangible change we created together.

Cultural Event: Following the Ripples of Impact

On May 8th, Adventure4Change hosted “Following the Ripples of Impact”, an evening that brought together funders, partners, donors, staff, and community members to celebrate the influence of our shared efforts. The event showcased how collective action, rooted in culture and community, continues to spark transformation. Guests were welcomed with mocktails, cultural music, and snacks like puff-puff and samosas, setting the stage for connection. A traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony led by community mother Mamaye grounded us in heritage and hospitality. Youth performers lit up the evening with vibrant cultural dances, reminding us of the creativity and strength in the next generation. Keynote speaker Maedith Radlein challenged us to lean into understanding, compassion, and collaboration echoing A4C’s core mission. Handcrafted items from Basadi made by local women, showcased the economic empowerment of women entrepreneurs. A short documentary gave voice to our impact stories, followed by a Tea Time Chat where youth leaders Saeed and Abas reflected on how A4C shaped their lives.

The evening ended with a heartfelt message from board chair Corrie Ballantyne, reaffirming our commitment to sustained change. This was more than an event; it was a milestone in our collective journey toward equity and transformation.

Celebrating Life-Long Change Makers

At A4C, we know that real change begins with those who choose to show up consistently, compassionately, and wholeheartedly. On May 21st, we honoured our extraordinary volunteers who form the backbone of our programs. Their work from mentoring youth and supporting families to running food distributions has created a ripple effect that reaches every corner of our community.

The evening recognized those with over five years of giving to the neighbourhood, and celebrated every volunteer for their impact. These Life-Long Change Makers have helped transform lives not through grand gestures, but through steady, caring commitment. We’re proud to build a culture of giving where service is rooted in community, and we always have room for more hands and hearts ready to make a difference.

“It was a pleasure to get to reflect with conversations and games with other volunteers. It was fun to have a night just for us to hang out, have good food, and celebrate all that is happening in the Hub… “ — A

Strengthening Community Through Celebration

On June 18th, over 430 community members joined us at the Cedarbrae Festival, co-hosted with Cedarbrae Public School and Creekside Church. What may have looked like an afternoon of games and food was, in fact, a powerful act of community building. Children and families connected through soccer, bowling, and sack races.

Local moms and volunteers served meals with care, turning a simple barbecue into a space of warmth and belonging. Freezies from the Lakeshore South Community Association sweetened the day, but it was the spirit of togetherness that left a lasting impression. Events like Cedarbrae do more than entertain; they foster safety, pride, and inclusion. They remind us of the joy in gathering and the strength in celebrating together.

Equipping Future Leaders

Last quarter, our Youth Leadership Intensive Program prepared the next generation of leaders to step confidently into camp and leadership roles. With training rooted in real world scenarios and intentional mentorship, participants developed tools for creating safe, inclusive, and enriching camp environments.

Youth got to learn about leadership and role modeling, team work and communication, safety protocols; all the tools that are beneficial and will come in handy as they journey through life. These youth are now leading with empathy, responsibility, and vision ready to make camp experiences unforgettable for younger children. The program has strengthened their leadership and has helped define their identity as changemakers.

Growing Curiosity and Confidence

This spring marked the exciting launch of A4C Kids: Minds in Bloom. This vibrant new program allowed children to come together to explore, build, and grow through creativity and connection. Each week, we welcomed 20 enthusiastic young learners into a joyful space filled with hands on learning and play. Young participants exploring topics like science, art, and personal development through interactive workshops. Kids not only expanded their curiosity but also built confidence and friendships in a supportive environment. Attendance was strong, and the feedback from families and facilitators reflected the meaningful growth experienced by all involved. We’re especially grateful for the support of our incredible partners Drayton Entertainment, Nike, and the University of Waterloo’s ESQ team who brought energy, knowledge, and inspiration to our sessions. From crafting musical rhythms and painting flower pots to imaginative virtual building, our children embraced every moment with curiosity, collaboration, and creativity. Their involvement made this first season of Minds in Bloom even more meaningful. Thank you to all the families, partners, and staff who helped bring this program to life. We’re excited about the journey ahead and can’t wait to see what continues to bloom!

Youth in Action For the Planet

This Earth Day, our youth volunteers rolled up their sleeves and took to the community with gloves and garbage bags in hand. The cleanup not only made a visual impact on local green spaces but also ignited conversations around environmental stewardship and responsibility. Their dedication showed that even small actions can lead to big change. As the summer unfolds, we look ahead to more opportunities to inspire and empower. Thank you for standing with us in this mission. Every story, every program, and every success last quarter was made possible because of your belief in our shared work.

BSU/BSA Youth Leadership Highlights

Our BSU (Black Student Union) and BSA (Black Student Association) youth continued to demonstrate leadership and initiative last quarter. From organizing school events to hosting youth panels, these young leaders provided a voice for their peers and inspired others through action. They also supported community initiatives and offered insights on creating more inclusive spaces across schools and programs. At EDSS, the Black Student Union hosted their first ever basketball tournament at the school. Planned and organized by the students with the help of Adventure4Change staff, this tournament served as a platform to spread awareness, share information, and engage school members in a competitive basketball tournament: forming a melting pot as many students interacted.

Building Confidence through Play

Through our sports programs, we have continued to grow, mentor, engage and build skills for youth in our neighborhoods. With basketball and soccer running weekly, young people are developing not just athletic abilities, but the confidence and resilience to lead both on and off the field. Our basketball program, led by a KW Titans player and youth mentor, has quickly become a highlight of the week. Each session welcomes around 11 youth who are not only sharpening their skills but also learning about discipline, teamwork, and perseverance.

The presence of a professional player offers inspiration and direct mentorship, creating meaningful connections through sport. Meanwhile, our soccer program runs four days a week: high school girls soccer on Monday evenings, Tuesdays for girls, Wednesdays for boys, and Fridays for open sessions. These practices do more than build footwork and fitness; they nurture leadership, encourage collaboration, and foster self-esteem in a supportive environment. These sports initiatives continue to be safe, inclusive spaces where youth feel empowered, seen, and supported reminding us that sport can be a profound pathway to lifelong growth.

Celebrating a Journey of Impact: From Volunteer to Leader

As Josh Brown prepares to leave his role to pursue further education, we take this moment to honour his incredible journey and lasting legacy at Adventure4Change. Josh began as a volunteer and joined the A4C team in 2018 as our Youth Engagement Coordinator. Since then, he has become a trusted mentor and positive force for more than 120 youth in our neighbourhoods. Whether leading community trips, supporting families, coaching sports, or running core programs like Connect, his work has always been guided by care, authenticity, and a deep belief in the potential of others. His growth from a volunteer into a respected leader is a testament to the power of community rooted work not only in transforming lives but also in shaping those who serve. Through his years at Adventure4Change, Josh gained more than experience; he gained a family of mothers, brothers, and sisters who will continue to hold space for him as he moves forward. We are deeply grateful for the heart, dedication, and wisdom Josh brought to his role. His impact lives on in every young person he mentored and every relationship he nurtured.

Men’s Program: Conversations That Matter

This year, we re-launched the Men’s Program that creates space for fathers in the community to connect, reflect, and share wisdom. These gatherings offered a safe and welcoming environment to discuss the unique challenges and experiences such as raising children in Canada, navigating cultural transitions to supporting their children’s growth and identity. In one powerful session, the sons of participating fathers prepared and served a meal, adding a deeply personal and intergenerational touch to the evening. These conversations strengthened relationships, deepened understanding, and highlighted the power of vulnerability and mentorship among men.

Welcoming New Staff

As the summer unfolds, we look ahead to more opportunities to inspire and empower. Camps this year have been revamped and are running as we report bringing new energy, structure, and excitement to our seasonal programming. Stay tuned for more updates on the impact and joy these experiences are bringing to our youth! Thank you for standing with us in this mission. Every story, every program, and every success last quarter was made possible because of your belief in our shared work. Together, we create ripples of change that grow into waves of transformation.
