Our Mom’s Sewing Program is more than just a place to create, it’s a vibrant community where moms connect, share their stories, and practice their English in a warm, supportive environment. Each morning session fosters a deep sense of belonging that goes far beyond sewing.

This Ramadan, the program continues to thrive, offering a welcoming space for creativity and connection. Every week, moms come together not only to practice English and share experiences, but also to craft their Eid clothing in preparation for the upcoming celebration.
Each session offers something special: Wednesdays are reserved for guided sewing projects, while Thursdays are dedicated to personal creations, giving moms the freedom to bring their unique ideas to life.
This winter, we were thrilled to welcome a new part-time staff member, a community mom whose support has been invaluable as the program grows. With around 25 moms participating and two dedicated volunteers, the impact has been inspiring.
For moms like Dany, the program has been nothing short of life-changing. Back in France, Dany had a passion for sewing, but after moving to Canada, she felt disconnected and longed for a sense of community. Everything changed when a friend introduced her to the sewing program. For Dany, it’s not just about creating garments; it’s about making friendships, sharing knowledge, and finding a renewed sense of purpose. One of her proudest moments was creating a dress entirely on her own, a testament to her growth and the skills she’s gained, which she now shares with others.

Another mom, Mujidat, not only found a community but also discovered her path to leadership. When she first arrived in Waterloo as a student, she struggled to find her footing. But when she attended her first sewing class at Adventure4Change’s Hub, she was welcomed with open arms. Already skilled in sewing, Mujidat quickly became a mentor, teaching techniques and learning from the other moms. As the program grew, so did her involvement. Now, she leads Basadi Sewing, a social enterprise born from the program that provides employment opportunities for newcomer moms through public sewing classes and professional services.
Under Mujidat’s leadership, Basadi Sewing is not only creating financial stability for the moms but also championing sustainability and cultural expression. The enterprise offers services such as mending, upcycling, and custom sewing, while providing moms with meaningful work and a space to flourish creatively and personally.
The inspiring stories of Dany and Mujidat reflect the true impact of the Mom’s Sewing Program. It’s about more than just sewing it’s about building a community where every stitch strengthens bonds, every project tells a unique story, and every mom finds a place to belong, grow, and thrive.
